Winter’s Steadfast Pulse:

The air bites silver, sharp with woodsmoke. Frost clings to kale and silver beet, while mist softens leafless trees and the bent backs of gardeners, their breath blooming as they prune, mulch, and laugh over a shared pot of tea. Sunlight, thin and pale, gilds moss-clad beds and gnarled wattles. Beneath the quiet, life persists: broad beans pierce frost-stiff soil, and garlic roots dream deep. Here, winter is not dormancy but resolve—a season of gloved hands, whispered plans, and the garden’s slow, sure heartbeat, steady as the distant sea.

What to plant in Winter?

Winter planting here means sowing garlic and hardy greens into South Gippsland’s rich, fertile soil. These crops grow deliberate and deep—frost on their leaves, mist in their veins—strengthening in the quiet chill before spring’s surge.

  • Garlic

  • Spring Onions

  • Carrots

  • Beetroot

  • Cauliflower

  • Broccoli

  • Spinach

  • Potatoes

  • Kale

  • Leek

  • Onion

  • Brussel Sprouts

Leafy Greens for Winter?

Leafy greens such as spinach, silverbeet and mustard greens are all great options for planting during the winter.

Important Notice

We are saddened and disappointed to report the ongoing theft of vegetables from numerous members' plots within the Leongatha Community Garden.
This is a serious breach of trust and respect for the hard work and dedication of our members. These plots are cultivated by individuals who invest their time, money, and effort into growing food for their own personal consumption.
The member's plots are not a public food bank or a source of free produce. The garden is a space for our members to collectively garden and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
We urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward. We will be reviewing security measures and taking appropriate action to prevent future occurrences.
This theft is not only a loss for the individuals affected but also a disheartening blow to the spirit of our community garden.
Please respect the hard work and property of our members.
Sincerely,
The Leongatha Community Garden Committee
