Shared Harvest, Quiet Joy: Autumn in the Garden

The air crisps, carrying the scent of compost and damp earth. Russet edges appear on the tomato leaves, a touch of gold on the ripening pumpkins. Sunlight slants through the fading sunflowers, dappling the garden beds. Autumn in the community garden: a time of harvest, a shared bounty, and a quiet satisfaction.

What to plant in late Autumn?

At the end of autumn in South Gippsland (late May), you can plant cool-season vegetables like peas, broad beans, spinach, kale, and lettuce, as well as garlic and bulbs like daffodils and freesias. Autumn is also a great time to plant herbs such as coriander, parsley, and thyme.

Vegetables:
  • Leafy Greens: Spinach, lettuce, rocket, mustard greens, silverbeet.

  • Root Vegetables: Carrots, beetroot.

  • Other Vegetables: Peas, broad beans, kale, chinese cabbage, radish.

  • Brassicas: Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage.

Herbs:
  • Annual Herbs: Coriander, parsley, thyme.

  • Perennial Herbs: Rosemary, mint, oregano.

Important Notice

We are saddened and disappointed to report the ongoing theft of vegetables from numerous members' plots within the Leongatha Community Garden.
This is a serious breach of trust and respect for the hard work and dedication of our members. These plots are cultivated by individuals who invest their time, money, and effort into growing food for their own personal consumption.
The member's plots are not a public food bank or a source of free produce. The garden is a space for our members to collectively garden and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
We urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward. We will be reviewing security measures and taking appropriate action to prevent future occurrences.
This theft is not only a loss for the individuals affected but also a disheartening blow to the spirit of our community garden.
Please respect the hard work and property of our members.
Sincerely,
The Leongatha Community Garden Committee
